Hoyas Draw Old Dominion 2-2

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team tied the Old Dominion Monarchs 2-2 on Thursday evening in the Hoyas season opener. With the draw, GU moves to 0-0-1 on the season and the Monarchs start the season at 0-0-1.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"It was a tough game, and it is always disappointing to not get a result in the final few minutes of a game. They were asking questions of us all night long and it's not like they were not creating chances or half chances. I felt we needed a third goal to kill the game, and I thought we had it with the penalty call that the referee reviewed and called back. I was pleased with some of our players, I thought Shay Montgomery, Maja Lardner and Henley Tippins were all excellent for us. Up front, I thought we asked a lot of questions of their defense. We definitely need to do a better job in the midfield, but they have sophisticated European players that play technically sound and move off the ball really well and I thought we were always chasing in the midfield which put a lot of pressure on our back three. Overall, I can't really dispute the result because I thought Old Dominion did enough to get a result. If it was a boxing match, I think we would have gotten it on points but the goal at the end there was a quality finish from their player, and we knew she could do it we just didn't close down on her quick enough and technically in her stride she finished it really well so credit to them. We have to learn and get better, but it is very early in the season, and we will be ready to go for James Madison next week who will be a similar opponent."

About the Match
  • Georgetown had the first opportunity of the game as Maja Lardner took the ball down to the end line and cut a ball back to the penalty spot where Henley Tippins was waiting. Tippins couldn't get enough on the shot and the ODU keeper swallowed it up, keeping the score at 0-0.
  • Both teams continued to press up and down the field but neither side was able to break through and find the back of the net.
  • In the 33rd minute, ODU carried the ball down the right flank and whipped in a cross towards the penalty spot. Madison Telmer was on the other end of it and was able to slot one into the bottom right corner, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 advantage with 17 minutes left in the half.
  • GU was able to create a few good opportunities but finally broke through in the 40th minute. A long ball from Cara Martin found the head of Jocelyn Lohmeyer who flicked it on to Lardner who was able to slot one into the bottom right corner, tying the contest up at 1-1 right before the break.
  • Shortly after the break, Tippins took a hard foul in the box and earned a penalty kick for the Blue & Gray. Shay Montgomery stepped up to the spot and hammered her shot past the ODU keeper giving GU a 2-1 advantage early in the second stanza.
  • In the 67th minute, Mia Serna laced a shot headed for the top left corner from nearly 30 yards out. Martin was able to get enough on the shot to push it off the bar and hop on the rebound keeping the score at 2-1.
  • The Monarchs were able to even the score in the final minutes off a full volley from outside the box. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.
