WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the Bucknell Bison 1-0 on Thursday evening behind an 87th minute goal from senior
Shay Montgomery. With the victory, GU improves to 4-1-2 on the season while Bucknell slides to 2-5-1.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Tonight was frustrating for us, I don't feel we had our best stuff. Bucknell was well up for the game, they made it very difficult for us to impose ourselves, so credit to their players and coaching staff. In the first half, we didn't compete hard enough to warrant a lead so going in at halftime scoreless was not where we wanted to be.
The second half was much better, we created more, competed more and with a stronger referee, we would have had more than one penalty. Thankfully we got one late and
Shay Montgomery stepped up and finished strongly. However, we will need to be better on Sunday against a more dangerous St. Mary's team.
I do want to credit some of our kids for refusing to settle for anything less than a win, in particular Natalie Mean,
Maja Lardner,
Henley Tippins and
Maya Wiese gave us a good lift in the midfield. Great teams can overcome a team running on high energy and poor officiating and that's what we are aiming for."
About the Match
- Bucknell came out of the gates pressing the Hoyas early. The Bison were able to create a couple chances getting off three shots and earning a corner in the first six minutes of action.
- Georgetown went on a run of its own putting the Bison under immense pressure over the next 15 minutes. GU was able to create a few good chances but was unable to capitalize as the score remained even 25 minutes into the match.
- With three minutes left in the half, the Blue & Gray had a fantastic opportunity as Montgomery intercepted a ball at the top of the box and was able to rifle a shot on target towards the bottom left corner. The Bucknell keeper made and incredible save to keep the score even right before the break.
- GU put pressure on the Bison early in the second half. 10 minutes into the frame, a cross from the endline towards the penalty spot found the foot of Henley Tippins who hammered a first touch shot towards the left side netting. The Bucknell keeper once again stood tall and was able to perry the ball outside the post where a Bison defender was able to clear it towards the sideline keeping the score even.
- In the 87th minute, Natalie Means was taken down in the box by the Bison defense and she earned GU a penalty in the waning moments of the contest. Montgomery stepped up to the spot and slotted her attempt into the bottom left corner of the goal helping GU secure a 1-0 road victory.
