LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) (Nov. 22, 1999) -- Kevin Braswell scored 17 points to lead Georgetown to a 71-55 victory over Memphis on Monday night in the opening round of the Maui Invitational, spoiling the debut of interim head coach Johnny Jones.

The Hoyas (2-0) will face No. 4 North Carolina, which beat Southern California 82-65, in Tuesday night's semifinals.

Jones was appointed interim coach on Nov. 13, the day head coach Tic Price unexpectedly resigned. Jones had been an associate head coach at Memphis for the last two seasons.

Georgetown closed the first half with a 7-0 run for a 32-25 lead and opened the second half with a 9-0 run, going ahead 41-25 with 17:52 to play.

Memphis went 6:03 without scoring, missing 10 consecutive shots before Courtney Trask's turnaround with 16:41 left brought the Tigers within 41-27.

But Memphis' poor shooting continued and Georgetown extended the lead to as many as 25 points, the last time at 68-43 on two free throws by Jason Burns with 3:03 to play.

Nat Burton had 13 points and was the only double-figure scorer for Georgetown, which saw 10 of the 11 players who saw action score.

Earl Barron had 15 points for Memphis, which finished 16-for-72 from the field (22.2 percent). Courtney Trask and Aaron Mulvagh each added 11 points for the Tigers, who got a total of 15 points from their starters, only four in the second half.

Memphis played without starting center Kelly Wise who did not make the trip because of failure to follow athletic department academic requirements.
