Scruggs Leads Hoyas to 65-61 Win Over Miami

WASHINGTON (AP) - (Jan. 15) Lee Scruggs scored 16 points for Georgetown, which held on to beat Miami, 65-61, in a Big East Conference game.

Ruben Boumtje Boumtje put the Hoyas (9-6, 1-3 Big East) ahead when he was fouled on a dunk with 39 seconds left to play. Johnny Hemsley missed a 3-pointer for the Hurricanes (9-7, 2-2) with 17 seconds remaining and Miami was forced to foul. Anthony Perry sank two free throws to secure the win. Elton Tyler led Miami with 18 points.

Georgetown went on a 15-4 run early to take a 19-11 lead. The Hoyas held Miami at bay to stay ahead 35-28 at halftime. The Hurricanes opened the second half with an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead.

Neither team was able maintain its lead for long. There were 18 leads changes in the second half.

Georgetown out-rebounded Miami, 54-35. The Hoyas 32 offensive rebounds nearly matched the Hurricanes' total. It was the most rebounds Georgetown had recorded against Miami in the series between the schools.

Scruggs, who joined Georgetown three weeks ago as a junior college transfer, had his best game as a Hoya. He finished with eight rebounds and four blocks to go along with his team-high 16 points.

The Hoyas win snaps Miami's six-game regular season winning streak against Georgetown.
