Field Hockey Falls in Double Overtime, 2-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 18) - The Georgetown University field hockey team lost, 2-1, to the University of Richmond in double overtime on Oct. 18, on Kehoe Field. The Hoyas' record is now 10-4.

The Spiders scored the only goal of the first half at 1:42, connecting on a penalty corner. Heather Rice netted the goal, while Holly Chase and Megan Conway earned the assists. The Hoyas tied the game, 1-1, with just over 10 minutes left in the second half. With Georgetown players scrambling in front of the goal, freshman forward Leeanne Rizzo (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) was finally able to knock the ball in, scoring her fifth goal of the season.

With the game knotted at the end of regulation, Georgetown and Richmond squared off to play two 15-minute sudden-death, seven-on-seven overtime periods. Neither team was able to score in the first overtime. However, in the second overtime period, the Spiders put the game away. At 87:04, Jill Murphy's close-range shot went in for the game-winning goal.

Freshman forward Shelby Samperton (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and junior backs Cecilia Kline (Annandale, Va./Thomas Jefferson) and Bridget McConnell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) all had defensive saves for the Hoyas.

Georgetown Head Coach Laurie Carroll was impressed with her team's defensive effort. After the game she said, "Defensively we played a great game. Our defense came up huge. Today was about possession, and unfortunately we weren't able to hold onto the ball when we had offensive chances."

Georgetown sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Herring (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) had nine saves, while Richmond's Brooke Fuller tallied 10 saves. The Hoyas will continue their homestand as they host Albany on Oct. 21, at 10 a.m. on Kehoe Field.
