WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 4) - Georgetown University's field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Stanford University, 2-0, on Oct. 4. The Hoyas, who were the last undefeated field hockey team in Division I, are now 8-1.
Stanford's two goals were almost identical and came less than three minutes apart in the first half. At 9:03, Christina Williams was able to convert a penalty corner for the Cardinal. Sara Herman and Erica Swesey earned the assists. The three teamed up again at 11:20, giving Stanford a two-goal lead.
The Cardinal had a first-half advantage, taking five penalty corners while Georgetown had none. The Hoyas did have opportunities in the second half, but were not able to capitalize. The game was very physical, with three Stanford players receiving green cards.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Herring (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) had seven saves for Georgetown and Rebecca Shapiro had four saves for Stanford.
The Hoyas will be in action again as they play at Rutgers University on Oct. 7, at 1 p.m.
