WASHINGTON (AP) (February 10, 2000) -- Ruben Boumtje Boumtje scored a career-high 32 points as Georgetown defeated Southern of New Orleans, 90-55, Feb. 10 at McDonough Arena.
The Hoyas (13-10) trailed only once during the game and that was early in the first half. Southern (9-11), an NAIA school from Louisiana, has never beaten Georgetown in eight tries.
Leon Mitchell scored 17 points to lead the Knights.
Southern, which was overmatched from the start, had no answer for Boumtje Boumtje. The 6-foot-11 center missed only one of his 11 field goal attempts after halftime, scoring 22 of his 32 points in the second half. It was the most points scored by a Georgetown player since Victor Page scored 35 points against St. John's on Jan. 21, 1997.
The Hoyas, who rank ninth in the nation in field goal percentage defense, held Southern to 32.1 percent shooting from the field.
Georgetown forward Lee Scruggs, who had an off-night offensively, blocked a career-high five shots. Courtland Freeman had a career-high 13 rebounds for the Hoyas.
Georgetown, which averages 69.6 points per game, scored 90 points for the first time this season. The Hoyas made 52 percent of their field goal attempts, their second highest shooting percentage of the season.
Georgetown usually plays its home games at MCI Center in downtown Washington. However, this game and the Morgan State game were both played at the Hoyas campus arena.
