WASHINGTON - (Feb. 20) Lee Scruggs had a career-high 23 points and 13 rebounds as Georgetown beat Pittsburgh 62-50 in a Big East game Sunday afternoon.
The Hoyas (15-10, 5-7) blew open a four-point halftime lead by outscoring Pittsburgh 20-9 in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Ricardo Greer and Jarrett Lockhart scored 15 points each for the Panthers (10-13, 2-10), who have lost four straight and 10 of 12.
Georgetown won its third straight and improved to 11-4 at home.
Despite the Hoyas' dominance at the start of the second half, three 3-pointers by Lockhart kept Pitt close. His third 3-pointer, with 14:45 remaining in the game, cut Georgetown's lead to 40-36.
Scruggs and Ruben Boumtje Boumtje then took control for the Hoyas, combining for 11 unanswered points and a 51-36 lead with 12:00 to go.
Boumtje Boumtje, who scored 27 points in a victory at Pittsburgh on Feb. 13, was held scoreless until converting two free throws 7:00 into the second half. He capped off the decisive run with a three-point play.
Scruggs scored the Hoyas' first 10 points and Georgetown bolted to an 18-11 lead on Anthony Perry's 3-pointer with 14:51 left in the first half.
But Georgetown scored only four points in the next six minutes and the Panthers took a 23-22 lead when Lockhart's basket finished a 6-0 run.
A 3-pointer by Pittsburgh's Jeremy Holmes created a 27-27 tie with 3:40 left in the half, but a Perry jumpshot and a put-back by Nat Burton gave the Hoyas a 31-27 edge at the half.
