Hoyas Blast Maryland-Eastern Shore, 14-5

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 24) - Freshman Jason Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) clocked the first homerun of his Georgetown career, and Andrew Salvitti (Fr., North Wales, Pa./LaSalle) pitched seven innings with five strikeouts in a 14-5 rout of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday, February 23, at the GU Baseball Stadium.

Helped by sacrificed at bats from Eric Santana (Jr., Santurce, P.R./Edgewood) and freshman Tony Green (Bromall, Pa./Malvern Prep), Boice's two-run HR in the first inning catapulted the Hoyas to an early 4-0 lead that the team never relinquished. A Jay Catalano (Jr., Hunting Valley, Ohio/University School) single in the second scored Pat Wade (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown) from third. Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) would later score off an error to extend the Hoya advantage to 6-0.

UMES responded in the top of the fourth. The Hawks' John Gorrell registered a double that brought in two runs and Mike Revelle's RBI single trimmed the Hoya lead to 6-3.

Georgetown took notice in the its half of the fourth. With two outs and assisted by two Hawk errors, GU posted six runs on only two hits for a 12-3 margin. Wade and Marc Carlini (Jr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) each tallied RBI walks, while the rest of the Hoyas' runs were unearned.

Boice was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI and two runs for Georgetown. The Hoyas' Jon Blodgett (So., Peabody, Mass./Peabody) scored twice and knocked in a run. John Gorrell led the Hawks with a 2-3 day. Adam Pallone was credited with the loss after allowing seven runs, five of which were earned, in 2-2/3 innings. Salvitti got the win. As a team, Georgetown had 12 hits, 14 runs, and one error.

GU looks to extend its two-game winning streak on Saturday and Sunday, as they take on St. Joseph's (Feb. 26) in a doubleheader contest starting at noon followed by Sunday's matchup against Manhattan in another doubleheader which also begins at noon.
