Georgetown Baseball Takes Two From St. Joseph's

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown defeated St. Joseph's 8-4 and 8-6 in doubleheader baseball action on Saturday, February 26, at the GU Baseball Stadium. The two wins moves the Hoyas back to .500 overall with a 5-5 mark, while the Hawks fall to 0-4 overall. GU is currently riding a four-game winning streak under first-year head coach Pete Wilk after suffering five consecutive losses.

Senior Josh Corman (Lexington, Ky./Lafayette) went 1-for-3 with three RBI and scored twice, and Jon Blodgett (So., Peabody, Mass./Peabody) hit a solo homer to lead Georgetown in game one to an 8-4 victory.

Blodgett, who was 1-for-2 on the day, led off the GU fourth with his first homerun of the season, and started a torrid stretch which saw the Hoyas score five runs in the inning.

Jim Reilly led St. Joseph's going 2-3 with two RBI while Justin Godusky was 3-4.

GU got on the board first as Eric Sutton (So., Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) knocked in Matt Carullo (Fr., Oakton, Va./Paul VI) to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks' Reilly posted a two-run shot to right center in the second, but Blodgett reached on a fielder's choice, which brought in Corman to tie the game at 2-2. Both teams exchanged scores again in the third as Tom Gibson of St. Joseph's and Marc Carlini (Jr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) of Georgetown each crossed the plate. Blodgett's homer and Corman's double in the fifth, helped by an error on the Hawks, scored Eric Santana (Jr., Santurce, P.R./Edgewood), Sutton, and Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven). A passed ball brought in Corman and gave GU an 8-3 advantage.

St. Joseph's would pick up another run in the sixth as Kevin Dougher doubled down the right field line to score Pace Bradshaw. Neither team would score again putting GU in the win column with the 8-4 victory.

Vankoski got the win going four innings while allowing three runs. Scott Fremont of the Hawks went 3-2/3 innings while allowing six runs.

Despite two homeruns by St. Joseph's and four errors by the Hoyas, Georgetown managed to pull out an 8-6 victory in game two of the doubleheader. Reilly hit his second homer of the day in the second inning scoring two runs, and Godusky doubled to bring in Rob Reed and put the Hawks ahead 3-0. GU would register five runs in the second behind double two RBI singles from Pat Wade (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown) and Vankoski. Wade's two RBI single scored Jason Boice (Fr., Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and Mike Green (So., McLean, Va./Landon School), while Vankoski clocked in Wade and Corman. GU final tally of the inning came from Carullo who singled in Vankoski.

The Hawks went up again, 6-5, in the third scoring three more runs off Godusky's three-RBI homerun. Carullo tied the game in the fourth with a RBI single that scored Brian Cassese (Jr., Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester). In the sixth, Vankoski bunted in Corman for a run and Carullo singled home Santana for GU's second score of the inning and the 8-6 win. P.J. Martinez (So., Washington, D.C./Landon School) started on the mound for the Hoyas and went 4-2/3 innings allowing six runs. Reliever Matt Arizin (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) notched his first win of the season with a two strikeouts, no hit performance in 1-1/3 innings. Closer Tony Pina (So., Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) was credited with the save. St. Joseph's Jim Boylan went 5-1/3 innings while allowing eight runs. Vankoski and Carullo each led the Hoyas in game two by going 3-for-4 behind the plate and posting three RBI. Godusky was in charge of the Hawks attack with a 3-4 day as well with four RBI and two runs scored.

The Hoyas are in action again on Sunday, February 27, at the GU Baseball Stadium as they take on Manhattan in an afternoon doubleheader beginning at noon.
