Hoya Baseball Splits Against Manhattan

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 27) -- Georgetown's baseball team split a doubleheader against Manhattan on Sunday, winning the first game 12-3, but falling in the second by a 6-4 score. GU's overall record now stands at 6-6, while the Jaspers move to 3-1.

The Hoyas pounced on Manhattan early scoring eight runs in the third inning of game one. Junior catcher Pat Wade (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown) hit a grand-slam homerun for his first solo launch of the season, and Jason Boice (Fr., Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) each tallied two RBI to give GU an 8-1 advantage.

The Jaspers picked up two scores in their half of the fifth, but Georgetown would post four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to claim the 12-3 victory. Wade went 1-for-3 for the Hoyas with four RBI, while Boice finished at 2-4 and three RBI and Vankoski was 1-1 with two RBI and three walks. Russ Taveras led Manhattan going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Junior pitcher Randy Erwin (Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) went the distance for GU allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out seven in seven innings. The Jaspers' Joseph Perrapato was handed the loss after allowing seven runs in 2-2/3 innings.

Georgetown didn't fare so well in the second outing, thus ending its five-game winning streak. Leading 4-1, the Jaspers managed to put five runs on the board in the sixth to stake a 6-4 edge. The biggest difference between the two games was in the pitching. Manhattan's Eric Sullivan and Scott Martin pitched three relief innings of two hit ball to keep the Hoyas at bay and take the 6-4 win. Also, in game one, the Jaspers put 15 batters on base via base-on-balls but didn't allow a single batter on base freely in game two.

Marc Carlini (Jr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) led GU going 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Boice was 2-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Manhattan's Kevin Rowett and Wendell Anderson each went 2-3. Anderson also posted a RBI. Taveras was 1-3 with two RBI.

Sullivan was credited with the win and the Hoyas' Paul Perillo (So., Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Ardsley) took the loss allowing two runs in 1/3 of an inning.

Georgetown is home again on Wednesday as it faces local rival George Mason at 3:00 p.m. at the GU Baseball Stadium.
