Georgetown Downed By George Mason in Baseball

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 1, 2000) -- Georgetown fell to area rival George Mason, 12-2, in collegiate baseball action on Wednesday, March 1, at the GU Baseball Stadium. Third baseman Eric Santana (Jr., Santurce, P.R./Edgewood) and second baseman Josh Corman (Sr., Lexington, Ky./Lafayette) each posted a RBI for the Hoyas who fall to 6-7 on the season, while the Patriots move to 2-6.

Corman was 1-for-4 for the afternoon, while Santana went 2-4. Patriots' shortstop Mark Gibbs went 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored and first baseman Brian Forthofer was 1-3 with three RBI and scored a run to lead George Mason. Gibbs also registered his second homerun of the season, while right fielder Derek Morrison launched his first.

Gibbs' HR came in the first inning giving GMU a 2-0 edge. After scoring another run in second, GU got on the board in the bottom of third to trim the lead to 3-1. Morrison's double in the fifth combined with third baseman Teddy Puitz's sacrifice fly pushed George Mason advantage to 5-1. In the sixth, Gibbs sacrificed for a score and Forthofer doubled with bases loaded scoring three Patriot players and helped move GMU to an 8-1 margin. Morrison homered in the ninth to lead the Patriot charge as they crossed the plate for three more runs and take a 12-1 lead. Georgetown would go on to score in the bottom of the inning.

Freshman Patrick Salvitti (North Wales, Pa./La Salle) started on the mound for the Hoyas going six innings with eight earned runs off seven hits and two strikeouts. The Patriots' Travis Hardman pitched seven strong innings for GMU allowing one run off three hits with six strikeouts to post the victory. George Mason's Craig Haney and Chris Murray provided one run, one hit relief for two innings.

Georgetown will look to get back to .500 on Friday as it takes on Air Force at 3:00 p.m. at the GU Baseball Stadium.
