WASHINGTON (AP) (March 1, 2000) -- Kevin Braswell and Nat Burton scored 16 points apiece as Georgetown defeated West Virginia 72-54 on March 1 at the MCI Center.
The Hoyas (16-12, 6-9 Big East Conference), who beat a Big East team other than Pittsburgh for the first time since January, enjoyed their largest margin of victory in a conference game this season. The Mountaineers (13-13, 5-10), who had won three in a row against Georgetown, lost their fifth straight game.
Marcus Goree had 17 points to lead West Virginia. Demetrius Hunter and Lee Scruggs each added 10 points for the Hoyas.
When West Virginia opened up the game in a zone defense, Georgetown took advantage by making six 3-point field goals before halftime. Braswell and Scruggs each had a pair of 3-pointers in the first half. The Hoyas finished with seven 3-pointers in the game.
But it was the Hoyas' defense which helped them build their 37-18 halftime lead. Georgetown, which ranks fifth in Division I in field goal percentage defense, held West Virginia to 7 of 25 (28 percent) from the field in the first half.
The Mountaineers went without a field goal for a 6 1/2-minute stretch during the first half and had scored just 10 points 9 minutes 39 seconds into the game.
Georgetown led by as much as 24 points in the second half.
