Hoya Women's Lacrosse Falls To Princeton, 8-6

PRINCETON, N.J. (March 18) - The Princeton Tigers proved to be an inhospitable host to the women's lacrosse team on March 18. Princeton's Julie Shaner scored three goals and added one assist to lead the ninth-ranked Tigers to an 8-6 victory over the sixth-ranked Hoyas at The Class of 1952 Stadium. The loss was Georgetown's first of the season and moves GU to a 4-1 record.

Shaner got Princeton on the scoreboard first with a goal 3:45 into the first half. The Hoyas tied the score at 1-1 on a free position shot by senior midfielder Kristen Baer (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) at the 5:32 mark. The Tigers proceeded to fire off four unanswered goals, including two by Shaner, to take a 5-1 lead with 1:32 remaining in the period. GU sophomore attacker Kate Ahearn (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) cut Princeton's lead to 5-2 with an assisted goal with just 3.1 seconds remaining on the clock before the half. Baer was credited with the assist.

Junior All-American midfielder Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) fired one into the nets after picking up a pass from junior midfielder Sarah Oglesby (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) with 17:37 left in the second period to make the score 5-3. Lauren Simone took advantage of a free position shot to push the Tigers' lead back to three, but Baer responded with an unassisted goal at 13:01 to make the score 6-4. Princeton's Kim Smith set up co-captain Hilary Maddox for her third goal of the game with 11:25 left in the game. A free position goal by Mimi Hammerberg give the Tigers an 8-4 lead with 9:08 remaining in the contest. The Hoyas rallied, scoring two goals in two minutes to cut the Princeton lead to 8-6 with just 4:48 on the clock. Sheehan Stanwick tallied her second goal of the game off a free position at the 6:18 mark, followed by sophomore attacker Erin Elbe's (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) free position goal at 4:48. The Tigers controlled the ball for much of the final minutes and held on for the 8-6 win.

Junior Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and sophomore Chandler Vicchio (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) split time in the goalkeeper cage for the Hoyas. Holden rejected 14 Tiger shots, while allowing all eight Princeton goals. Laura Field, Princeton's goalie, posted 11 saves on the day while allowing six goals. The Hoyas outshot the Tigers 24-17, however, the Tigers held a 10-8 advantage in free position shots.

The Hoyas' next game is Saturday, March 25, when they take on the Blue Devils of Duke at 12:00 Noon in Durham, N.C.
