Baseball Wins Doubleheader Against Yale

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 4) -- Georgetown's baseball team took two from Yale on Saturday, March 4, at the GU Baseball Stadium. The Hoyas won game one by a 2-1 score, and came from behind in game two to top the Bulldogs, 5-4. The two victories pulls GU's record to 8-8. Yale slips to 0-2 overall.

Rightfielder Brian Cassese (Jr., Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) and second baseman Josh Corman (Sr., Lexington, Ky./Lafayette) each posted a RBI for Georgetown in game one. Cassese singled in center fielder Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) in second inning to give the Hoyas a 1-0 edge. The drama unfolded in the sixth as Yale's Tony Coyne knocked in Brian Ivy to tie the game at 1-1. But, GU was able to get a bases loaded situation and recorded the winning run off Corman's walk to score first baseman Eric Sutton (So., Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach). Yale ended its seventh inning with a double play giving the Hoyas the 2-1 victory.

Junior Randy Erwin (Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) pitched a complete game win for Georgetown allowing one run off four hits and striking out two. The Bulldogs' Matt McCarthy took the loss going 5-1/3 innings with two earned runs off seven hits and four walks.

The Hoyas rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic come-from-behind victory in game two of the doubleheader. With the Bulldogs up 4-2, a Yale error scored Corman to trim the margin to 4-3. Leftfielder Marc Carlini (Jr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) tripled to center field to bring in pinch hitter Jason Boice (Fr., Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) which knotted the score at 4-4. Then, Vankoski launched a sacrifice fly out to left field to score Boice and lift GU to the 5-4 win.

Carlini was 2-for-4 in game two with two RBI to lead the Hoya attack. Steve Dankof and Chris Elkins were each 2-4 for Yale. P.J. Martinez (So., Washington, D.C./Landon School) started on the mound for the Hoyas. He pitched a complete game allowing four runs off eight hits and struck out four. Relief pitcher Sudha Reddy took the loss for Yale pitching 2/3 of an inning with three earned runs off three hits.

Georgetown hosts Air Force on Sunday, March 5 at 12 noon on the GU Baseball Stadium. On Friday, the Falcons defeated the Hoyas by an 11-1 score.
