Washington, D.C. (April 22) - Mike Henehan (Jr., Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) scored his fourth goal of the game with 58 seconds remaining as Georgetown outlasted UMass, 19-18. With the win, the Hoyas clinched first place in the ECAC and earned an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
UMass had the last possesion in the game in the GU end, but an illegal procedure call with two seconds remaining turned the ball over to the Hoyas.
Andy Flick (Sr., Wilton, Conn./Wilton) led the Hoyas with three goals and three assists. Henhan added four goals and an assist, while Scott Urick (Sr., Fairfax, Va./Robinson) had three goals and an assist for GU. The win improved the Hoyas record to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the ECAC. GU finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record at home. Alex Racioppi led the Minutemen with a career-high seven goals.
Henehan scored the winner after UMass tied the game at 18-18 with three minutes to play. GU had taken an 18-16 lead just minutes before when Henehan scored his third goal of the game and Brant Gresham (Fr., New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) scored his first career goal. However, UMass attackmen Kevin Leveille and Kevin Dell scored within 12 seconds to even the score.
Trevor Walker (Fr., Haverford, Pa./Episcopal) put the Hoyas on the board just 27 seconds into the contest. UMass scored five of the next six goals to take a 5-2 lead with 6:40 remaining in the first period. Five different players scored for the Minutemen during that stretch. Henehan scored the second of his two first quarter goals with 5:52 to play, but Racioppi answered that 31 seconds later. Urick, Steve Dusseau (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Mike Kanach (So., Annandale, Va./Annandale) scored in succession to tie the game, but Racioppi beat the clock with his third goal with one second left in the quarter to give UMass a 7-6 lead.
UMass continued the scoring in the second quarter when Racioppi found the net twice to give the Minutemen a three-goal lead. GU would answer by scoring six of the last seven goals of the half to take a 12-10 lead. Urick had two goals within a 24 second span and Jamie Sharpe (Jr., Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) ended the half with a goal with just 14 seconds to play.
The Hoyas held the lead until UMass rattled off three goals off to end the third period. Mike Janowicz, John Madigan and Racioppi countered goals by Georgetown's Tom Tamberrino (Jr., Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hill College) and Flick to tie the game at 14. After a Janowicz goal, Flick scored twice as GU took a 16-15 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Scott Schroeder (Summit, N.J./Summit) made 10 saves for GU. Chris Campolettano had 20 saves in a losing effort for UMass. The Hoyas will play at Rutgers on Saturday at 7:30.
