FAIRFAX, VA. (May 4) - George Mason scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull away and defeat Georgetown by an 8-2 score on May 4, in collegiate baseball action at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field. With the loss, GU's record moves to 13-40 overall while the GMU improves to 21-29-1.
The Hoyas made it 1-0 in the top of the third after third baseman Matt Carullo (Fr., Oakton, Va./Paul VI) walked, and shortstop Josh Corman (Sr., Lexington, Ky./Lafayette) doubled to score Carullo. The Patriots' third baseman Greg Filson responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-RBI single.
Both teams played fairly evenly through the fourth and fifth stanzas, but George Mason broke the game open with their five run sixth inning. Four hits, two Hoya errors, and a wild pitch contributed the Patriot outburst and increased their advantage to 7-1. Center fielder Eddie Jordan added an insurance run for GMU in the seventh with a solo homer down the left field line to make it 8-1.
Center fielder Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) singled to the right field in the eighth to score second baseman Jay Catalano (Jr., Hunting Valley, Ohio/University School) for GU's final talley of the afternoon.
Hurler Paul Perillo (1-5) (So., Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Ardsley) started on the mound for the Hoyas going four innings and allowing two runs off three hits. The Patriots used four pitchers keep GU at bay allowing two runs off seven hits. Shawn Stiffler (2-0) earned the win for GMU.
Georgetown concludes its regular season this weekend by hosting BIG EAST foe Connecticut in a three-game series. The Hoyas meet the Huskies in a doubleheader on May 6 beginning at 12 noon, followed by the final game, which will be on May 7 at 12 noon.
