Elster Nets a Hat Trick in Hoya Field Hockey Win

October 21, 2000

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 21, 2000) -- Freshman back Elena Elster (Wiesbaden, Germany/Lawrenceville School) scored the game-winning goal as Georgetown came from behind to defeat the University at Albany, 3-2. The Hoyas improve to 11-4 overall, while the Great Danes fall to 8-7 on the season.

Albany got on the board first as Angie Stegel scored an unassisted goal at 11:57. Stegel connected again at 18:58, this time off an assist from Lisa Burline. The Great Danes led 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, junior back Bridget McConnell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) sparked the Hoyas when she took the ball the length of the field on a fast break. Although she did not score, McConnell's play was the turning point of the game, giving Georgetown the momentum it needed.

At 47:48, Elster netted her first goal of the game when she converted a penalty stroke. Less than two minutes later, Elster teamed up with freshman forward Leeanne Rizzo (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and junior midfielder Aubrey Bruggeman (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) to score another goal at 49:27 on a penalty corner. The game-winner came when the trio of Elster, Rizzo and Bruggeman converted another penalty corner at 57:58.

Georgetown sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Herring (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) had three saves, while Albany's Cathi Burek tallied 10 saves. The Hoyas will continue their homestand as they host LaSalle on Sunday, October 22, at 1 p.m. on Kehoe Field.
