DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 17) -- Georgetown dropped to 0-3 on the season as they fell to the Duke Blue Devils, 14-6, in Durham, N.C. Utilizing four freshman pitchers in relief the Hoyas got some much needed experience while the offense produced a season-high six runs.
Senior Randy Erwin (Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) sustained the loss giving up nine runs on ten hits in 2.1 innings. Freshman pitcher Tom O'Connor (North Wales, Pa./La Salle) made his second appearance of the season yielding five runs in 2.2 innings. Freshman pitchers Kevin Galvin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep), Kevin Field (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), and Tim Nunziata (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) completed the game. The trio combined to limit Duke to one run over the final three innings.
Led by freshman outfielder Carlos Gazitua's (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) three RBI's, Georgetown combined for a season-high six runs. Sophomore Jason Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) grounded into a fielder's choice and senior Jim Vankoski (Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) crossed the plate producing the Hoyas first score of the game. With two outs in the fifth, Gazitua knocked in three runs with his second double of the season. In the top of the ninth, Marc Carlini (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) and Phil Pierorazio (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) recorded RBI's. Carlini extended his hitting streak to three games.
The Hoyas play the Blue Devils again tomorrow (2/18) before hosting Delaware State at home on February 21 at 2:30.
