Georgetown falls to UMBC 19-9

February 28, 2001 -- Georgetown suffered their sixth loss of the season as they fell to UMBC 19-9 in Baltimore, Maryland. Freshman Carlos Gazitua (Miami, FL/Monisgnor Pace) led the offense scoring twice, knocking in three runs, and hitting the Hoyas first homerun of the season.

The Hoyas fell behind early but stormed back to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning. Consecutive singles by Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven, NY/St. Anthony's), Ron Cano (El Segundo, CA/El Segundo), and Tony Lee (Bomall, PA/Malvern Prep) pushed the first run across the plate for Georgetown. The Hoyas added another three runs capitalizing on a Retrievers' error and a single by Matt Carullo (Oakton, VA/Paul VI).

UMBC however scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth taking a 12-4 lead. The Hoyas roared back in the top of the sixth scoring five runs on six hits. Cano and Lee led of the inning with singles followed by Gazitua's three-run homer. Gazitua is now batting .368 on the season with two doubles, a homerun, and nine RBIs. Carullo and Jim Vankoski (Aston, PA/Strath Haven) also scored in the fifth closing the deficit to 12-9.

Georgetown was unable to get any closer as they gave up seven more runs. The game was called after the top of the eighth inning due to darkness. The loss drops the Hoyas to 0-6 on the season. They face UMBC again this Wednesday, February 28, at 3:00 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland.
