WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown broke open a close game with five-straight goals to start the fourth quarter as they defeated Penn State, 12-5. Freshman Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and sophomore Mike Hammer (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) each recorded two goals and two assists in the contest, while senior tri-captain Scott Doyle (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) had his second hat trick of the season. The fourth-ranked Hoyas remained perfect on the season at 3-0 and 1-0 in the ECAC Conference. It was the 12th-straight home win for the Hoyas, who have not lost in Washington, D.C. since March 27, 1999.
The Hoyas special teams had a solid game. The man-up unit was four of six on the day, while GU held Penn State's man-up unit to just two goals in 11 attempts.
GU opened the scoring when Goldman scored just 1:25 into the contest on a man-up situation. Hammer had an assist on the goal and then scored GU's only other goal of the period with 3:42 remaining. The Nittany Lions got on the board when Rob Bateman scored with 27 seconds remaining in the first.
The teams traded goals in the first half of the second period, but GU extended its lead when Trevor Walker (Haverford, Pa./Episcopal) and Doyle each tallied late in the half. GU led at the break, 5-2. Doyle had an extra man goal in the third quarter, but Penn State answered when Will Driscoll and Rob Booth scored to cut the lead to 6-4. That was as close as Penn State would get. Hammer scored his second of the day with 3:45 left in the third period. It was the first of six-straight GU goals. The fourth quarter belonged to the Hoyas. Steve Dusseau (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), who now has 10 goals in three games started and ended the scoring in the period. In between his goals, Walker, Sharpe and Doyle scored to give the Hoyas a commanding lead. Penn State's Luke Ogelsby put home a shot with 1:38 to play to make the final 12-5.
GU goalkeeper Scott Schroeder (Jr., Summit, N.J./Summit) registered 12 saves in picking up his third win of the year. Penn State had a solid outing in the cage by Matt Vallone, who had 22 saves in just under 55 minutes.
Georgetown looks to extend its unbeaten streak at home on Wednesday, March 14, when the Hoyas host Butler at 3 p.m. on Harbin Field.
