GU Splits Double Header Against BC

A complete game three-hitter by Randy Erwin (Sr., Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) in Game 1 helped the Georgetown baseball team to their third BIG EAST win of the season as they split a double header against Boston College on Sunday, March 25, at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. The Hoyas now stand at 8-15 on the season, just five wins off their 2000 season total.

The Hoyas, behind a strong pitching perfomance by Randy Erwin and a homerun by Eric Santana (Santurce, P.R./Edgewood), defeated the Eagles in Game 1 of the double-header 3-1. After consecutive hits by Robert O’Hare (San Jose, Calif./Mission College) and Brian Cassesse (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) and a Phil Pierorazio (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) walk to juice the bases in the second inning, Ron Cano (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) earned an RBI the tough way bringing in the first run of the game on a hit batsman. Boston College tied it at 1-1 when the Eagles took advantage of two singles and a stolen base in the fourth. Georgetown took a 3-1 advantage in the fifth when Santana followed a Jason Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) double with a drive over the left field wall. Santana’s homerun was the first of his Georgetown career. The two-run lead was all that Erwin needed as he earned his second victory of the season completing the game allowing just three hits, one earned run, while striking out one.

Georgetown out hit Boston College 10-7 in the latter half of the double header but fell 8-6 in a game that came down to the final pitch. The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first on hits by Mike Hubbard and Chris Rosado. GU claimed the lead in the second when both Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) and Marc Carlini (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) scored. The Hoyas lead was depleted the next inning when BC took advantage of two errors, two hit batsmen, one walk, and one hit for three runs reclaiming the lead 4-2. The Hoyas trimmed the lead down to one in the fourth when Ron Cano scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Green (McLean, Va./Landon School). The game remained 4-3 until the eight when both teams put up three’s on the scoreboard. Starting pitcher Eric Sutton (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield) left the game after one out in the eighth but the Hoyas staff was unable to close the door on the Eagles. The defining moment came with the bases loaded, two outs, and a three-two count with Hoyas closer Tony Pina (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) on the mound and the Eagles Josh DiScipio at the plate. DiScipio followed off six or seven pitches in the at-bat before breaking through with a double knocking in all three runs. The Hoyas bounced right back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Hits by Robert O’Hare, Michael Lombardi, Marc Carlini, and Matt Carullo (Oakton, Va./Paul VI) accompanied by two Eagles errors led to the comeback. BC added another run in the ninth increasing the lead to 8-6. Jason Boice led off the ninth with a double but was followed by three consecutive outs as the Hoyas dropped an 8-6 decision to the Eagles. Sutton suffered the loss going 7.1 innings, striking out eight, and allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits. Lomardi led the offense batting 3-4 with two runs scored.

The Hoyas welcome cross-town rival George Washington to Shirley Povich Field on Tuesday, March 27 at 1:30 for a double-header. Georgetown also host Coppin St. on Thursday at 3:00 before finishing their 21-game home stand on the weekend with a three-game set against Rutgers.
