ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy scored nine-consecutive goals in the second half, while giving up just one second-half goal to third-ranked Georgetown, as the Midshipmen posted an 11-4 win over the Hoyas at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Sunday afternoon in Annapolis. The Mids (5-3/3-2 ECAC) recorded their fifth-consecutive win after starting the season 0-3, while the Hoyas (6-1/2-1 ECAC) lost their first game this season
Sophomore midfielder Trevor Walker gave Georgetown a 1-0 lead in the first period, taking a Jamie Sharpe pass and tossing it past Navy goalkeeper Jon Higdon at the 7:49 mark of the opening period. Navy countered three minutes later, as senior Michael Cataffo scored an extra-man goal to even the score. It was the first of three Navy extra man goals.
Navy took its first lead of the game three-and-a-half minutes into the second period, as the Mids scored another extra-man goal when Greg Conklin put a shot by GU's Scott Schroeder. Georgetown's two-leading scorers on the season, Steve Dusseau and Mike Hammer, worked together to score back-to-back goals to close out the half and gave the Hoyas a 3-2 edge at the break.
Once again, it was a penalty that led to a Navy run which produced nine-consecutive goals. Senior Nick Lockwood tied the game up at 3-3 with an extra-man goal just 21 seconds into the second half. Meanwhile, McKinnon and Cataffo gave the Mids a 5-3 lead after three quarters of action.
Navy stretched the lead to 9-3, scoring four goals in the first-five minutes of play in the fourth quarter.
The Hoyas, who were held scoreless since the 6:59 mark in the second period, got back on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by senior Mike Henehan.
Georgetown was 0-for-9 with the extra man in the contest. The Hoyas led the nation in extra-man percentage entering the game. GU will look to rebound when the Hoyas play at #13 Bucknell on Wednesday. Bucknell defeated Hobart 12-4 on Saturday and is now 7-2 on the season.
