BALTIMORE, MD -- Seniors Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Academy) and Caitlin McLean (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) were named to the US Lacrosse Women's Division I All-America First Team, while senior Sarah Oglesby (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) was selected as an All-America Honorable Mention. Stanwick and McLean are repeat selections to the first team from a year ago, while Oglesby picks up the award for the first time.
Sheehan Stanwick, a three-time Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) First Team All-American, has enjoyed a sensational senior season, becoming the most prolific scorer in the 25-year history of Georgetown women's lacrosse. She is the first player in GU history to reach 300 points, score 200 goals and tally over 100 points in a season. Stanwick's career totals include 232 goals and 98 assists for 330 points. For the 2001 season, she posted 75 goals and 40 assists for 115 points, a new Georgetown benchmark for most points in a single season. In the latest NCAA Division I Statistical Leaders List released on May 6, she is ranked fourth in the nation in points per game (5.81) and goals (3.81). Stanwick, a tri-captain for the 2001 squad, is also fifth on the assists leaders list with a 2.00 average. She is the 2001 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and is a finalist for the first-ever Tewaaraton Trophy. The Tewaaraton Trophy, the most cherished and prestigious trophy a collegiate lacrosse player can receive, is presented annually to the top female and male collegiate lacrosse players in the United States. It is the fourth year in a row that Stanwick has been recognized with Regional All-America honors.
McLean, a consistent presence in Georgetown's nationally ranked defense the past four years, earned her second-consecutive Brine/IWLCA First Team and Regional All-America awards. McLean's responsibility as the Hoyas' match-up defender at the midfield position is to shut down many of the nation's top attackers, a job she has excelled at. Her solid performances made her a nominee for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy. This season, McLean tied for second on the squad in ground balls (56) and caused turnovers (36). She also won 13 draws and posted five goals and one assist for six points. McLean amassed 214 ground balls, 108 caused turnovers and 59 draw controls in her four years as a Hoya, as well as 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. The 214 ground balls rank her second on the GU all-time list, while her 59 draws move her into seventh place on that list. A four-year starter on GU's field hockey team, McLean was a tri-captain of the 2001 nationally ranked squad. She scored four goals and two assists for 10 points and made four defensive saves this past season.
Oglesby, a midfielder and four-year starter, was a large part of the Hoyas' success this season, particularly on the draw and in transition. Oglesby's career totals include 118 points from 84 goals and 34 assists. She has also tallied 184 draws, 196 ground balls and 75 caused turnovers. A three-time US Lacrosse National Tournament South Team selection, Oglesby holds the top spot on GU's all-time leaders list for draws, third place for ground balls, 10th place in career assists, goals and points. She led the Hoyas in draws this season, for the third year in a row, with 34 and was third on the squad in ground balls with 52. Oglesby was fourth on the 2001 team in scoring with 28 goals and five assists for 33 points. In addition to her achievements on the GU lacrosse team, Oglesby has also excelled on the Hoyas' field hockey team where she started at the midfield position. She was a tri-captain of the 2001 squad and earned the Marilyn Dodd Loyalty and Service Award as well as MVP honors.
Georgetown had its best year ever in the 25-year history of the program under sixth year Head Coach Kim Simons. The team made its fourth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and advanced for the first time ever to the semifinal and championship game. In addition, the Hoyas were the 2001 BIG EAST Champion and finished the year with a 17-3 overall record and a perfect 6-0 in BIG EAST play. The 17 victories set a new school mark for most wins in a season.
