Washington, D.C. -- Georgetown University men's basketball player, Mike Sweetney (Fr., Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill), was selected to be one of 16 finalists on the 2001 USA World Championship for Young Men Team.
Sweetney competed with 45 of the top men's college basketball players at the three-day Trials, which was held June 1-3 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The final roster will include 12 of the 16 finalists and the final roster will be set during the team's July 22-26 training camp in Dallas, Texas. The 2001 USA World Championship for Young Men Team will compete August 3-12 in Saitama, Japan, in the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men Tournament. Longtime Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim will serve as head coach and will be assisted by Ernie Kent of Oregon and Phil Martelli of St. Joseph's (Pa.).
The Hoyas completed their 2000-01 season with a 25-8 overall record and a run to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament. Sweetney led the Hoyas in scoring and rebounding during the season with 12.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg. He was also named to the 2000-01 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team and to the All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention Team.
