Georgetown Field Hockey Beats VCU in Strokes

RICHMOND, Va. - Georgetown women's field hockey (6-5) made good on its first two penalty strokes to come away with a victory over Virginia Commonwealth (4-8) after the teams battled to 0-0 tie in field hockey Saturday afternoon at Cary Street Field.

Neither VCU nor Georgetown was able to score during two full periods and a pair of 15-minute overtime sessions, setting up the series of five penalty strokes to determine a winner. The Hoyas put the Rams in an early hole when junior Lauren Galbally (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and freshman Katy Conicella (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) each made good on their attempts, while GU goalkeeper Jessica Herring (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) made two strong saves on VCU's first two tries. Georgetown missed its next two attempts, giving the Rams some breathing room, but they could not capitalize on the moment, putting the Hoyas above .500 for the first time this season.

VCU outshot Georgetown 17-8 but the Rams could not solve Herring, who finished with nine saves.

Georgetown hosts American on Tuesday Octber 15 at 3:30 on Kehoe Field.
