Field Hockey Busts the Piscataway Curse Beating Rutgers 3-2

10/5/2002

Box Score

Piscataway, N.J. - Georgetown field hockey (5-5) won for the first time in Piscataway as the Hoyas downed the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (2-9) 3-2 in a closely contested affair at the Rutgers Stadium Complex. Leading the charge for the Hoyas was Leeanne Rizzo (Walpole, Mass./Walpole), playing one of her most productive games this season. Buzzing the Rutgers end throughout the afternoon, Rizzo assisted on the second Hoya goal and scored the game winner to even Georgetown?s record on the season.

Lighting up the scoreboard early, the Hoyas jumped to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Lauren Galbally (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) off a strong Meghan Leahey (Windham, N.H./St. Paul?s School) pass. Four minutes later a streaking Dionna Jordan (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Academy) took Rizzo?s pass and put it in the back of the cage to give the Hoyas a two-goal cushion. Georgetown took this lead into halftime and appeared in control of the action but the charging Scarlet Knights had other plans. Scoring two goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half, Rutgers knotted the game at two while forcing Georgetown goalkeeper Jessica Herring (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) to make a number of circus saves to stem the tide. With time running out and the score tied, Rutgers boarded up the windows and prepared for the arrival of their eighth overtime period this season.

But at 53:10 the Hoyas struck the deciding blow, connecting on a scramble in front of the Rutgers cage to regain momentum. Jessica Quinn (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) forced the Rutgers keeper to make a difficult save, the ball squirting lose in front of the goal. With the goalkeeper down and out Rizzo extended and fired the ball into the back of the cage to earn the win. The goal marked Rizzo?s second game winner of the season and gave her three points on the afternoon.
