Women's Crew Opens Season

March 25, 2002

Camden, NJ--The Women's Lightweight Crew opened its season at the Jesuit Invitational hosted by St. Joseph's University on the Cooper River. Strong winds kept the water very choppy providing poor racing conditions throughout the day. Georgetown's Varsity Lightweight 8 won its event in a time of 7:38.2 over second place Fairfield University (8:06.0) and third place College of the Holy Cross (8:16.7). About an hour after their race, the varsity doubled-up into the Varsity 8 for added race experience. Racing against openweight crews, the lightweights finished fifth behind Holy Cross, Fordham, St. Joe's, and Loyola, respectively, but ahead of Fairfield.

The Frosh/Novice Lightweights were also in action at the Jesuit Invitational, but racing in openweight events as they were the only lightweight crews participating. Competing in two events, their better result was in the Frosh/Novice 4 where they placed second (8:49.8) behind winner Fairfield (8:26.4) and ahead of Loyola, St. Joe's, and Fordham. In the Frosh/Novice 8, they placed fifth in a time of 8:26.8 behind winner St. Joe's (7:41.1), Fairfield, Holy Cross, Loyola, and ahead of Fordham.

Philadelphia, PA--The Women's Crew was to kick off its racing season with the annual Georgetown/Penn/Navy race, but strong winds and a whitecapped racecourse precluded any attempts. So that the day was not a total loss, the coaches agreed to a scrimmage of 3x3' racing pieces in a relatively sheltered stretch of water between the 2,000-meter racecourse and the famed Boathouse Row.

Results of the scrimmage were not reported due to the significantly varied affect of wind and current on the alternate racecourse. The race will not be rescheduled.
