Late Inning Rallies Not Enough; Baseball Loses Two to Villanova

March 28, 2002

Bethesda, MD ? Six runs on both ends of a weekday doubleheader proved not enough for Georgetown as they lost 6-8 and 6-9 to Villanova. GU?s defense was partly to blame as the Hoyas committed eight errors on the day resulting in six unearned runs. The losses drop the Hoyas to 7-22 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 14-9, 3-2 in the conference.

Game One
Georgetown grabbed an early 2-0 lead in game one on Bill Quinn?s two-run homerun to straightaway center in the bottom of the second. The lead was short lived though as Villanova gained a 3-2 advantage in the next stanza with three runs on three hits. The game remained still until the Wildcats took advantage of a lead-off walk and back-to-back errors in the fifth loading the bases without no one out. Villanova was able to add two hits in the inning and three runs increasing their lead to 6-2.

The Hoyas rallied though in the bottom of the fifth tying the game at six apiece with four runs on three hits. Third baseman Tony Lee led of with a walk and scored following a double by Mike Green and a two-RBI double down the left field line by James Supple. Michael Lombardi added the final two runs on a two-out homerun to right field.

Another error by the Hoyas in the sixth proved costly as the Wildcats collected three hits on top of the error for three more runs and a 9-6 lead. Georgetown was unable to get any offense over the final two innings losing their fourth consecutive game.

Starting pitcher Eddie Pena got a no-decision tossing 4.1 innings allowing six runs (4 earned) on six hits while striking out two. Senior Tony Pina (0-2), without giving up an earned run (3R) in relief, suffered the loss for Georgetown while Brian Slocum (2-1) earned the victory. Supple (2 hits), Lombardi (2 hits), and Quinn all collected two RBI?s in the game.

Game Two
The Hoyas fell behind 3-0 in the top of the second of game two as the Wildcats collected the three runs on Brian Trotta?s three-run homer to centerfield. Georgetown trimmed the lead down to two with a run in the bottom of the second. Carlos Gazitua led of with a double to left field and scored three batters later on a two-out double by Bill Quinn. Matt Johnson followed with a single to center but Quinn, on an aggressive move by the Hoyas, was thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning.

Villanova used the long ball to increase the lead to 4-1 in the third with a homer to centerfield by Rob Cafiero. A two-run double by Brendan Mannix in the fifth gave the Wildcats a 6-1 lead. And then the Hoyas mounted another comeback.

Matt Carullo led off the fifth inning singling to right field starting the rally. Quinn followed by going deep down the left field line for a two-run homerun. Two outs were then made but the Hoyas would not give in. A Mike Green single and James Supple walk put runners on first and second with two outs for Ron Cano who delivered a double to right center field driving in both runners. A pitching changed ensued for the Wildcats but Gazitua greeted the new hurler with an RBI single to left field tying the game at 6-6 before Villanova got the final out on the next batter.

Just as in game one, the Wildcats came right back in the top of the sixth collecting two runs on one hit and two errors taking a 8-6 lead. The Hoyas were unable to get on the scoreboard again falling for the fifth time in as many games.

Starting pitcher Eric Sutton (4-4) suffered the loss while Dan Farino (2-0) earned the victory for the Wildcats. Quinn had three RBI?s during the game, Cano collected two, and Gazitua had the other. Johnson also went 3-for-4.

The Hoyas continue their BIG EAST play on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 11:00 a.m. EST in Bethesda, MD against Notre Dame.
