Georgetown, looking to end a six-game slide, came up short falling to Catholic University at Talbot Field in Washington, D.C. by the score of 8-3. Another short outing (3.1 innings) by the Hoyas starting staff and limited offense (three runs on seven hits) were too much for Georgetown to overcome as they fell to 7-27 this year.
GU was able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third taking advantage of two hits and a walk. Robert O?Hare, returning from injury and making his first start since March 2, 2002, led off the inning with a double to center field. Catcher Phil Pierorazio walked and advanced to second (O?Hare to third) on Mike Green?s sacrifice bunt. Freshman Jim Supple followed with a single up the middle to score O?Hare and advance Pierorazio to third with one out. Catholic was able to get out of the jam though getting Ron Cano to lineout to second base and then catching Supple on an attempted steal of second for the final out.
The lead was short lived as Catholic University tallied five runs over the next two innings on six hits and a Hoya error. Daniel Conway led the charge for Catholic doubling twice, scoring once, and picking up an RBI in that span.
Both teams traded runs in the sixth leaving Catholic with a 6-2 lead. The Hoyas got their run on a Ron Cano homerun to left field while Catholic?s Daniel Conway, who walked to get on base, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and then scored on Brian Pietryka?s single to right field.
GU added another run in the top of the seventh taking advantage of two walks and an error but were unable to close the gap any further eventually falling by the score of 8-3. Patrick Harrigan (2-2) suffered the loss for the Hoyas allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two. Adam Weiss (7-1) earned the victory for Catholic.
Georgetown is off the remainder of the week until a three-game conference set this weekend (April 6 & 7) in Piscataway, N.J. against Rutgers. The Hoyas are currently 2-8 in the BIG EAST but could move out of the cellar with a couple of wins against Rutgers who are 2-5 in the conference.
