PISCATAWAY, NJ ? The sixth-ranked Georgetown Hoyas held Rutgers scoreless for nearly three quarters en route to a 13-2 victory today at Yurcak Field. The Hoyas scored 10 unanswered goals to start the game before RU found the back of the net with eight seconds left in the third quarter. The Hoyas are now 11-1 and 4-1 in ECAC conference play.
Georgetown controlled the pace of the game, winning 14-of-20 face-offs and firing 55 shots, which is the most for an opponent against Rutgers this season. Georgetown opened the game by attempting 14 shots in the first quarter, followed by 15 shots in the second and third quarters, and 11 in the fourth. Eleven different Hoyas scored a goal against the Scarlet Knights.
The Hoyas started the scoring with two goals within a minute of each other in the first quarter. The first goal came off the stick of Trevor Walker (Haverford, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and then Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) buried the next Hoya score. GU added three more in the second quarter to account for a 5-0 lead at halftime. Different Hoyas scored all five first half goals. Mike Kanach (Annandale, Va./Annandale), Steve Dusseau (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md./McDonough) accounted for GU?s second quarter output.
Georgetown started the second half by scoring five more goals before Rutgers finally got on the board. Phil Vincenti (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) hit the first goal and then Doug Mueller (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) buried back to back tallies. Dusseau hit his second and Doug Staab (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) hit the back of the net to close out the Hoyas? third period scoring effort. After the Rutgers goal, Georgetown scored three times in the fourth quarter led off by Mike Boynton (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Matt Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) and Nick Miaritis (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) both scored their first goals ever in the Blue and Gray uniform to finish off GU offensive production.
Georgetown goalie Scott Schroeder (Summit, N.J./Summit) stopped 11 shots and allowed only one goal. GU's Andrew Owen (Charlottesvile, Va./Western Albemarle) also saw time between the pipes and gave up a goal. Meanwhile Rutgers? starting goalie Chris Kenyon recorded a career-high 21 saves and allowed 11 of the 13 Georgetown goals.
Georgetown will play its last game of the regular season this Saturday, May 4 in Syracuse, N.Y. against the Syracuse Orangemen at 2 p.m.
