Kim Simons Named IWLCA South Region Coach of the Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Kim Simons, head coach of Georgetown University?s women?s lacrosse program, has been named 2002 Intercollegiate Women?s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division I South Region Coach of the Year. The regional and national coaches of the year awards are based on outstanding accomplishments and contributions in and to the sport of women?s lacrosse. The awards are selected by a vote of the IWLCA membership.

Simons enjoyed another stellar season at the helm of the Georgetown University women?s lacrosse team. Simons led the 2002 squad to the program?s first ever No. 1 ranking, a 17-2 overall record, a fifth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and a second-straight appearance in the Championship Game. In addition, the Hoyas went undefeated (6-0) in BIG EAST play en route to the Conference title. Simons? career record now stands at an impressive 87-34 for a .719 winning percentage over seven seasons. Four of Simons? players from the 2002 squad were named to national All-America teams, including two to the First Team. Attacker Erin Elbe, was selected as the 2002 Honda Award winner for women?s lacrosse. Elbe is also a finalist for the 2002 Tewaaraton Trophy.
