A Welcome Letter From The Team

7/30/2002

Welcome to the Georgetown Women?s Golf Website. We are excited that you have come to find out more about our program. As you may know, Georgetown launched its Women?s Golf Program last year and got off to a fine start. Leland Beckel, a former Futures Tour Player and a member of the 2000 U. S. Curtis Cup Team was hired as our first Women?s Golf Coach, and we are thrilled that our first year was so successful. As we embark upon the 2002-2003 season, we are excited about our new prospective golfers, and the growth the team has made over the summer.

The goal of the Georgetown Women?s Golf Program is to provide an environment of growth and enhancement to the women golfer while supporting her in her academic achievements at Georgetown. We believe that if a student-athlete is excelling in her academic, social, and community endeavors at Georgetown, she will also excel in her golf performance. Playing golf in college is not always an easy feat, and we hope to provide a balanced atmosphere to our women players so that they can enjoy all aspects of their student-life at Georgetown.

While improving our golf is a priority for the team, we recognize that we are starting a new tradition at Georgetown with the pioneering of our golf program. Therefore, the success of our team stems not only from good scores, but also from the support we give to each other and the university environment. In keeping with the Jesuit value of ?men and women for others?, the team participates in a charity project each month to remind us how our teamwork can benefit the community.

Since Georgetown is in the heart of D.C., we do not have a dedicated golf course for our use. We practice at a different place each day, which we feel makes us more versatile. We have practicing privileges at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, MD and Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington and Fairfax, VA.

We also practice at two lighted and heated ranges ? Fair Oaks Golf Park, and White Flint Golf Park. Numerous public golf facilities give us time at their courses including Reston Golf Club where we will hold our inaugural Women Hoya Invitational, October 25-27, and East Potomac Golf Park. We are also thrilled that Georgetown is building a new indoor facility with hitting areas and putting/chipping greens. The facility will be ready for use in Fall 2002.

We were also thrilled to learn that this year the Big East has enough teams to complete the NCAA requirement for a conference championship. We will be eligible to be part of the Big East Golf Championship, a 54-hole event, scheduled for April 19-20, 2003 at Notre Dame?s Warren Golf Course in South Bend, IN. The winner of the Big East Championship can apply an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in 2005.

Coach Beckel is a stickler for enhancement of your golf game through fitness and nutrition. She is an advanced golf fitness instructor and believes that it is just as important to improve your game through the proper exercise, as it is to practice your swing. As a team we work out often and each team member is assessed in the beginning of the season to find the weaknesses and strengths in her physique. Our fitness includes such things as Pilates, weight training, medicine and Swiss ball work, light Plyometrics, and a cardiovascular regimen.

If you are interested in the Georgetown Women?s Golf Program, please contact Coach Beckel at her email site flb4@georgetown.edu or call her at 202-687-7960. It would be helpful to Coach Beckel if you can provide her with the following information: your current SAT scores and GPA, your tournament record and upcoming tournaments, and your reasons for looking at Georgetown. We feel Georgetown is a very special place and we hope you will too. Go Hoyas!
