Georgetown Field Hockey Blanks Monmouth in Home Opener

9/15/2002

Box Score

Washington, D.C. ? On a rainy Sunday afternoon the Hoyas (2-3) downed the Monmouth Hawks (1-4) 2-0 to earn their second shutout in a row. Hoya goalkeeper Jessica Herring (Ocean, N.J. / Ocean Township) has not allowed an opposition goal in 141:24. During this span she has also stopped two penalty strokes.

Leeanne Rizzo (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) opened the scoring with a deflection off a Hoya corner to put the home team up 1-0. Lauren Galbally (Malvern, Pa. / Villa Maria Academy) was credited with the assist. A strong defensive effort, led by the tenacious play of Shelby Samperton (Bethesda, Md. / Georgetown Visitation), limited the Hawks scoring chances. When they did slip behind the defense, Herring was there to shut the door.

The Hoya?s second goal was scored by Jessica Quinn (Cumberland, Md. / Lincoln School), her fourth tally in as many games. Quinn received a long pass in the Monmouth end, beat the defender inside and fired the ball at the charging goalkeeper. The ball brushed the goalkeeper?s blocker and dropped into the back of the net, putting Georgetown up by two.

Late in the second half Herring was forced to make a penalty stroke save after a Hoya foul in front of the net. Monmouth?s Gina Chico, already with six shots on net in the game, wound up and blasted a shot to the left side of the cage. Herring dove to her side and knocked the ball out of harm?s way. The 2-0 victory gives the Hoyas a two game winning streak.

Next action for Georgetown will be Tuesday, September 24 at 3:30pm against Towson.
