PHILADELPHIA ? Penn?s Liz Lorelli tied the program record for goals in a season when she scored three minutes into the game to lift the Quaker field hockey team over Georgetown, 2-1, on Wednesday night on Franklin Field. The win improves Penn to 9-4 on the season and extends their win streak to seven games, while the Hoyas fall to 5-10 on the season.
The Penn defense did an exceptional job of keeping the Hoyas out of the circle in the first half. Facing the defensive pressure, Georgetown managed just two shots in the first period and was awarded only two penalty corners.
Sophomore Kristen Gray put the Quakers up 2-0 early in the second half on a pass from junior Sara Shelley and sophomore Cara Calahan. The goal was Gray's second game-winner of the season.
Georgetown did not go down without a fight, as the Hoyas had eight penalty corners and riffled off three shots in the second period. Lauren Galbally (Malvern, Pa./ Villa Maria Academy) scored the lone Hoya goal with 11 minutes remaining in the contest.
Lorelli's 15th goal of the season was the only score in the first half. She dribbled into the circle and tipped the ball into the back of the box, tying the program record held by Nicky Hitchens (1998) and Lisa Romig (1978).
Penn?s Elizabeth Schlossberg made three saves in the game, while freshman Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md./ Rising Sun) recorded four saves for Georgetown.
The Hoyas return to action on Friday, Oct. 24, when they take on Appalachian State. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. on Kehoe Field.
Box Score: Penn 2, Georgetown 1
