The Hoyas came out on top of an 81-68 final score on 11/25/03, but had their hands full through 35 minutes of the game at MCI center, as Coastal Carolina proved relentless. Scrapping for loose balls and rebounding with a will, the plucky Chanticleers were not cooped until 4:46 remaining when the Hoyas began a 21-9 run for the final margin.
Gerald Riley and Ashanti Cook paced all scorers with 16 tallies each. Ray Reed set a new career high in scoring with 14 and Darrel Owen had his first career double-double, scoring a career high 13 and grabbing a career high 10 boards to pace all rebounders. Courtland Freeman set a new career high in steals with 5.
The Hoyas opened the game shooting as cold as they had against Penn State (30.3%). At intermission the Hoyas enjoyed a 3 point lead (33-30) after a half that saw 4 ties and no lead greater than 5 points. Although the Hoyas held a 27-18 edge in rebounding, the Chanticleers were hitting 40.6% of their shots.
In the second stanza with their opponents out-hustling them, the Hoyas waited until the 4:46 mark before the combination of their opponents crowing and a breakaway layup by Ashanti Cook woke them up. Fastbreaks by Owens, Cook, and Owens, steals by Riley, Owens and Reed and Free throws by Bowman (2-2), Cook (1-1), Owens (1-2) and Reed (2-2) sealed the win.
For the game the Hoyas shot 41%, as did the Chanticleers. Georgetown converted 80% from the stripe (28-35) and won the battle of the boards 44-36.
