SAN DIEGO, CALIF. ? Georgetown University?s women?s basketball program (6-4) battled into overtime but fell 66-63 to the University of Maryland (8-3) in the consolation final of the third annual Surf ?N-Slam Tournament hosted by the University of San Diego in Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led GU in the scoring column netting 17 points off five threes and a two. Carmen Bruce (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) finished with 16 points and Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) posted her 38th double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and notched seven blocks. Leading the Terps was Kalika France with 14 points and nine rebounds.
In the overtime period Maryland opened the scoring with a two from Delvona Oliver before GU retook the lead off a Lisicky three. Maryland?s France converted off an offensive rebound and Maryland held a 62-61 lead with two minutes left. Maryland held a 66-63 advantage with 14 seconds remaining as a tying three from GU?s Lisicky careened off the back rim with no time left.
The Hoyas started the second half on fire as Bruce hit a three, Brunson nailed a trey plus a foul and Bruce flew in for a baseline jumper. GU held a 35-28 advantage forcing the Terps to call a timeout with 18:07 to play. The Hoyas held a 43-38 margin with 11:57 to go after threes from Lisicky and Bruce along with a press busting layup by Sarah Jenkins (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist). Dominating defense from Brunson and three layups from Jenkins advanced GU to a 55-47 at the 6:23 mark. Maryland?s France hit a trey to close the gap to 57-53 at the four-minute media timeout. The game was knotted at 58 with one minute left as both teams committed turnovers and each had a shot to win the game but both teams? final efforts missed off the front of the rim.
Georgetown opened an early 10-3 lead with 13 minutes to play in the first half as four different Hoyas scored in the timeframe, led by two Bruce buckets. GU?s defense held the Terps to 2-of-15 from the field in the first 11 minutes and 9-of-31 (29.0%) for the full 20 minutes. GU went on a 7-2 run to close the half with a two pointer from LeSueur, two free throws by Brunson, who had seven total points and three blocks in the stanza, and a three from Lisicky. The teams entered the locker room tied at 26.
The Hoyas begin BIG EAST play this Saturday, January 3rd, against Seton Hall at home in McDonough Gymnasium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
