Washington, D.C. ? Georgetown University Women?s Lacrosse Head Coach Kim Simons announced that junior defender Michi Ellers (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) has been named a mid-season captain for the 2003 Hoyas. The selection is in recognition of Ellers? continued leadership, both on and off the field, as well as her inspired play.
Coach Simons comments, ?Michi has been a tremendous spark for our team this season. Her outstanding play and tremendous leadership has been key to our team?s success. I believe she will be a great asset as a captain this year.?
Ellers, a tough, talented defender, is a key component in the Hoyas? transition. She is a three-year starter who helped lead Georgetown to its second-consecutive appearance in the 2002 NCAA Championship Game and its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the national poll. Ellers capped off the 2002 season by earning Regional All-America Second Team honors.
Ellers has led the Hoyas in caused turnovers for three straight years (113 to date). In addition to the 113 caused turnovers, her career totals include 22 points (18G, 4A), 46 draws and 135 ground balls. Ellers is currently ranked third in the Georgetown record books in career draws, and #1 in the nation in caused turnovers.
Georgetown is ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Women?s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll released April 7. The Hoyas are 7-3 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST play.
