9/24/2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? After taking a 2-1 first-half lead, Georgetown?s offense managed only 1 second-half score, while American University exploded for 5 goals to hand Georgetown its seventh straight loss, 6-3, Wednesday on Kehoe Field. With the win, American improves to 7-1, while the Hoyas drop to 1-7.

American?s Melissa Snyder began the scoring in the 6th minute, when she rebounded teammate Maureen Daniel?s shot to put American up 1-0. Georgetown responded with a pair of penalty shot goals in the 10th and 13th minutes, when in each case, senior Leeanne Rizzo (Walpole, Mass./ Walpole) inbounded the ball to Caroline Cole (Boston, Mass./ Buckingham, Browne and Nichols), who in turn set up teammate Lauren Galbally (Malvern, Pa./ Villa Maria Academy) for the goal. Rizzo and Cole both posted 2 assists, and Galbally had both Georgetown goals as the game entered halftime with the Hoyas leading, 2-1.

American struck in the 39th minute, when Daniel scored off a corner, assisted by Snyder, and sophomore Shannon Goans. The Eagles took a 3-2 lead just over a minute later when they scored on a penalty shot by freshman Camila Infante.

Rizzo scored an unassisted goal in the 50th minute for the Hoyas, but AU netted the contest?s next 3 goals to seal the victory. Freshman Heidi Hershberger scored 2 of American's final 3 goals, while junior Javiera Villagra, set up by quick passes from Heather Maranzano and Camila Infante, posted AU?s other score. Infante ended the day with 3 assists and 1 goal.

Starting Georgetown goalkeeper Caitlyn Faller (Fredericksburg, Va./ Stafford) made 6 saves in nearly 56 minutes of work, while her replacement, Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md./ Rising Sun), made 7 saves in the game?s final 14 minutes. AU goalkeeper Laura Miller posted 4 saves on the day.
