WORCHESTER, Mass. - A Cornell goal midway through the second half broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Big Red to a 2-1 win over Georgetown in a neutral-site field hockey contest on the campus of Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. A day later, Holy Cross notched their third consecutive victory with a 6-2 win over the Hoyas, dropping Georgetown's season record to 1-3.
Against Cornell, sophomore Jessica Quinn (Cumberland, R.I./ Lincoln School) scored her fifth goal of the season with just 10.6 seconds left before halftime to tie the game 1-1. Cornell's defense stepped up throughout the contest, allowing the Hoyas only five shots and three penalty corners.
The strong play set up Jamie Woolsey's game winner with 22:01 left in regulation. Junior Julie Huang earned her first career point with an assist on the play.
Junior goaltender Kaitlin Tierney made four saves on the day in goal for the Big Red, while Hoya goalkeeper Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md./ Rising Sun) stopped 10 Cornell shots.
On Sunday, the Holy Cross field hockey team notched their third consecutive victory to open the 2003 season with a 6-2 win over the Hoyas.
Georgetown drew first blood on the Purple at the 27:31 mark in the first half. Jessica Quinn scored and gave the Crusaders their first deficit of the 2003 season. Holy Cross responded with three consecutive goals. Senior co-captain Jillian LeClair tied the score at 1-1 with her second goal of the season. Next, senior co-captain Heather Yanusas tallied the Crusaders second goal of the day, followed by freshman Tara Welch to push the Holy Corss advantage to 3-1. The Hoyas' Quinn cut the lead to 3-2 with her second goal of the game with 6:38 remaining in the half, but Holy Cross sophomore Jenna Cook scored 37 seconds later to make the score 4-2.
Holy Cross controlled most of the play in the second half. Cook added her second goal of the game, and third of the season, at the 20:56 mark in the second half. Junior Cathleen Kerman capped off the scoring with her first goal of the season, pushing the Crusader advantage to 6-2.
The Hoyas' next game is scheduled for Sept. 10 on the road against Towson.
