WASHINGTON, D.C. -- All-America candidate Rebekkah Brunson (Sr., Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) led the Georgetown University women?s basketball team (9-7, 3-3) to its second straight victory Wednesday night, defeating the St. John?s Red Storm (7-9, 1-4) by a score of 74-56. Brunson scored 25 points and pulled down 14 boards in the victory, marking her 41st career double-double and her BIG EAST leading ninth of the season.
After leading by a mere three points (28-25) after a low scoring first half, the Hoyas broke the game open in the early part of the second period. The Hoyas shot 60.9% from the field in the second half, compared to 39.3% in the first, leading to a second straight 70+ point performance.
The Hoyas benefited from an impressive performance by freshman guard Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph?s). Carlin set career highs of 12 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench. Junior guard Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./ Whitehall) was perfect from the free throw line and the three-point arc, adding 11 points to the Hoya effort.
Angie Clark and Shemika Stevens led the Red Storm with 13, and Kim MacMillan tallied 12. St. John?s shot 37% overall for the game, the 12th opponent Georgetown has held to under 40% on the season. Georgetown?s defense also held the Storm 11 points under its season average of 67.1.
The Hoyas travel to Rutgers for a live BIG EAST television game on Sunday, January 25th, at 12 noon. GU then goes to West Virginia on Wednesday, January 28th.
