VILLANOVA, Pa. ?In wet, sloppy conditions on Friday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex, the Georgetown women's soccer team (5-7-1; 2-4-1) battled Big East rival Villanova (10-4-1; 4-3-1) to a 1-1 double overtime tie.
Villanova notched the first goal of the game off a goal by Laura Johnson at the 22:36 minute mark in the first half. The play began when freshman midfielder Melissa Murowski sent a lead pass towards the right corner of the field. Fellow midfielder Stacia Hartung took possession and sent a cross to the right post, where Johnson finished off the play.
Georgetown wasn?t discouraged by the Wildcats goal, as the Hoyas scored a goal of their own, tying the game up at the 41st minute, right before the end of the first half. Georgetown's Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) knotted the contest up later in the first half with a game-tying header, off an assist from sophomore Cristina Araps (Belle Meade, N.J./Montgomery) who fed the ball from the top of the box.
After the two teams combined for 15 shots in the first half, the defenses took over in half number two. Villanova dominated the game's two 10-minute overtime periods, out-shooting Georgetown by a combined 6-2 margin.
Freshman goalie Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) stopped five in goal for the Hoyas. Villanova out-shot Georgetown 19-13 in the game.
Georgetown will next face Syracuse, as they host the Orangemen at home on Sunday, October 17 at 1 p.m. on North Kehoe Field. The Hoyas will be honoring their three seniors;
Nicole DePalma (Theills, N.Y., North Rockland),
Casey McCann (Mendham, N.J./Mendham), and
Elizabeth Roberti (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Southside).
