WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown University head men?s lacrosse coach Dave Urick today released the Hoyas' 2005 schedule along with the team captains for the upcoming season. Seniors Andy Corno (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), Rich D'Andrea (Belle Mead, N.J./The Peddie School), Brodie Merrill (Orangeville, Ontario/Salisbury School (Conn.)) and Nick Miaritis (Setauket, N.J./Ward Melville) will all be honored with captain duties in their final season and will lead Georgetown in an effort to once again compete for a national championship.
All four captains this season bring extensive Division I playing experience to their leadership roles. Corno, a midfielder and GU?s top face-off man, was a 2004 STX/USILA Second Team All-American selection and led the nation in face-off win percentage (186-of-273, .681) along with setting Georgetown?s career records for face-off wins (462) and ground balls (255). D?Andrea is a two-year starter in the cage, starting 28 times in his career, and owns a 20-8 record in those games. Long stick midfielder Merrill was a 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy finalist and a STX/USILA First Team All-American selection last season and finished second on the team in ground balls with 90 in addition to three goals and an assist. Miaritis started the majority of GU?s games last year at midfield and doubled his career statistics, finishing fourth on the Hoyas in points with 26 and tying for third in goals with 16.
Georgetown?s 2005 13-game regular season pits the Hoyas against five teams that were participants in the 2004 NCAA Championship and is the first season of the newly expanded ECAC conference with six league showdowns. The defending ECAC Champion and 2004 NCAA quarterfinalist Hoyas open the season for the second straight year against Maryland, this time in College Park on Saturday, February 26. The first league game is next at newcomer St. John?s before facing defending national champion Syracuse in Los Angeles, California on March 12. Two more away games place Georgetown at Delaware and then at new ECAC rival Hobart on March 19. The first home game of 2005 is on Saturday, March 26, when the Duke Blue Devils venture to Harbin Field. A showdown with national runner-up Navy takes place in Washington, D.C. on April 2 and is followed by two road affairs, versus Vermont and at Mt. St. Mary?s. Georgetown closes the season with four games against ECAC members, starting with first year member Loyola at home on April 16, UMass on the road on April 23, Rutgers in D.C. on April 30 and the regular season closer at home against Penn State on May 8.
