Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown University's (1-4, 0-3) defense caused six turnovers on the Bucknell (3-1, 1-0) offense, but it was not enough, as the Hoyas fell to the Bison, 35-19.
The Hoyas started out strong, forcing a fumble on the Bison's first drive and recovering on the Bucknell two-yard line. Two plays later, freshman tailback Emir Davis (Trenton, N.J./Hun) brought it in from the one-yard line for his first career TD, giving the Hoyas a 7-0 lead. Bucknell maintained its composure and played the field position game, resulting in a short Bison touchdown drive of 45 yards.
With the Hoyas' offense struggling to move the ball, the defense came up with another big play. With Bucknell in the Georgetown red-zone, freshman Matt Barbiasz (Fr., Ware, Mass/Ware) came up with an interception on the one-yard line, and ran it 99 yards up the sideline for the score. The interception return was the longest in Georgetown and Patriot League football history. The Hoyas missed the extra point and held a 13-7 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Bucknell's Dante Ross returned the ball 97 yards for a Bison score. Bucknell converted the extra point with less than six minutes to play in the first half, and took a 14-13 lead into the break.
Georgetown kicked off to open the second half and saw a repeat of Ross' first long return, this one going 85 yards for a touchdown. The two kickoff returns for scores by Ross is the first time in Patriot League history that a player has accomplished that feat. The Hoyas' defense once again rose to the occasion adding another six points on an 11-yard interception return for a score by junior safety Maurice Banks (Clinton, Md./Gwynn Park). The Hoya offense was unable to convert the two-point try, and Bucknell remained in the lead going into the final period.
Georgetown's defense, which had been solid all day, finally showed signs of wear, allowing a 14-play, 69 yard Bison touchdown drive, which ate 6:40 off the clock and effectively sealed the game for Bucknell.
The Georgetown offense gained 162 yards of total offense. Despite the six turnovers, Bucknell gained 330 offensive yards, 233 coming on the ground. Junior Kim Sarin (Roseville, Minn./Cretin-Derham) led the Hoyas on the ground with 61 yards. Quarterback Keith Allan (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) added 33 on the ground. Senior quarterback Andrew Crawford (Sr., Superior, Colo. / Fairview) came in relief in the fourth quarter, completing 5 of 13 passes for 89 yards. Janeiro Wooten (Sr., Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) led the team in receiving with three receptions for 63 yards, including a 45-yard reception to end the game.
Next week is Homecoming Weekend for the Hoyas, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. versus the visiting Virginia Military Institute.
