MORGANTOWN, W.Va.(AP) -- The Georgetown University women's soccer team (8-8-1, 4-4-1) upset number 16 West Virginia (14-4-0, 7-3-0) on Sunday afternoon 1-0 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Hoyas capitalized on a West Virginia foul 20 yards from the goal early in the first half to net the only score of the match. Freshman defender Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, M.D./Academy of the Holy Cross) sent a direct kick into the left upper 90 at the 8:32 mark.
The Hoyas were lead in the midfield by senior Nicole DePalma (Theills, N.Y./North Rockland) and sophomore Cristina Araps (Belle Meade, N.J./Montgomery). Freshman goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) notched her second shutout in a row and her fifth of the season. Higgins made five saves for the Hoyas.
With the win, the Hoyas moved into seventh place in the BIG EAST and clinched a spot in the BIG EAST tournament. The Hoyas will travel to BIG EAST opponent Pittsburgh on Wednesday, October 27 at 7 p.m. where they will make up the orginally scheduled September 17th game that was postponed due to weather conditions.
