Bronx, N.Y.? Derric Daniels threw three touchdown passes and Jamaal Hunte rushed 15 times for 116 yards to lead Fordham University (5-3, 2-1) to a 36-6 Patriot League win over Georgetown University (2-6, 0-4) on Jack Coffey Field.
For the third time in 2004, the Fordham defense held an opponent scoreless as the Hoyas lone score came on an interception return for a touchdown. The Rams? defense limited Georgetown to 172 yards of total offense on the day and sacked the Hoya quarterback four times.
Georgetown got on the board on the first play from scrimmage as Michael Ononibaku (Jr., Amhert, Mass. / Amherst) tipped and intercepted a Daniels screen pass at the Fordham 30 and he returned it for a 6-0 Hoya lead just 12 seconds in to the game.
Later in the quarter, Georgetown had the ball on the Fordham 41 on second down but quarterback Andrew Crawford (Sr., Superior, Colo. / Fairview ) fumbled when sacked by Patrick Orah and the ball was recovered by Adam Ackerman on the Fordham 47.
Hunte picked up 39 yards on the first play of the drive to put the ball on the Georgetown 14 but the drive would stall on the Hoya 15 and Micah Clukey came on to kick a 32-yard field goal to pull Fordham to within three 6-3, with 2:47 left in the first.
On Georgetown?s next possession, the Hoyas were forced to punt from midfield but punter Brad Scoffern (Jr., Oakland, Calif. / Bishop O'Dowd (St. Mary's Calif.)) couldn?t handle the snap and the ball was recovered by Fordham?s Jay Edwards on the Georgetown 40. Daniels would then complete two passes to put the ball on the 12 where he connected with Steve Porco, who outjumped his defender, on a 12-yard scoring strike on third down to give Fordham a 10-6 lead with 12:48 remaining in the half.
On their next possession, the Rams would move from their own 33 to the Georgetown 34 where Clukey booted a 41-yard field goal and put Fordham up 13-6 with 8:23 left in the second.
Late in the half, the Rams took over on their own 15 and Daniels drove the Rams to the Georgetown 25 where he found Erik Conroy with a 25-yard touchdown toss as Conroy outjumped his defender to put the Rams up 19-6 with 1:07 remaining.
On the ensuing kickoff, the ball bounced off the leg of a Hoya and the Rams recovered on their own 49. Daniels completed three straight passes to put the ball on the Georgetown ten but the drive stalled and Clukey connected on a 32-yard field goal to give Fordham a 22-6 halftime lead.
The Rams extended their lead on their first possession of the second half, moving 51 yards on six plays with James Prydatko scoring from the two for a 29-6 Fordham lead. Prydatko did most of the damage on the drive, rushing three times for 53 yards, including a 38-yard gain on third and 13 from the Fordham 47.
Fordham would close out the scoring when Marcus Taylor picked off a Keith Allan (So., Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) pass and returned it 43 yards to the Georgetown 19. Two plays later, Daniels hit James Caffarello with a 14-yard touchdown pass with ten seconds left in the third.
NaQuinton Gainous led the Fordham defense with eleven total tackles, eight solo, including two for a loss while Tommie Stephens made seven stops, five solo, and Cory Terzis finished with five tackles, three for a loss, and Aki Jones registered two sacks.
Daniels completed 13 of 31 passes for 145 yards and the three touchdowns which brings his season total to 17, second best in the Patriot League. Prydatko finished with 54 yards on eight carries for the Rams while Rashawn Haynes made three catches for 40 yards.
Georgetown next comes home on Saturday, November 6, for a 12:30 p.m. Patriot League showdown with Lehigh.
