The Scoop
The battle between Georgetown and Canisius will be the first time these two institutions have ever met in women's basketball. It is the third opponent this season that Georgetown has never faced and the Hoyas went 1-1 in the previous affairs, losing at Utah and defeating Army. After Canisius the Hoyas still have two more first time opponents to match up against in Kent State and Clemson. It has been 10 days since Georgetown last played and that was a 79-52 win over Lafayette. The Golden Griffins meanwhile are on a two-game win streak including a 81-65 victory this past Saturday against Buffalo at home.

It has been a roller-coaster season thus far for Georgetown as the Hoyas have yet to string together back-to-back wins. What has been consistent though is a strong defense that is forcing close to 18 turnovers a game, averaging nine steals and five blocks and limiting the opponent to 38.5% shooting. Junior Bethany LeSueur and senior Sarah Jenkins are GU's top steals combination with 16 and 12 respectively while Varda Tamoulianis, Christine Whitt and Amber Dorsey have been the shot erasers with 15, seven and six blocks respectively.

Canisius started the season with two straight losses but since then has won four out of five with wins over Colgate, Cornell, Rider and Buffalo and the lone loss coming to Loyola. Three separate Griffs have led the team in scoring this season and rank one, two, three in scoring average. Cheri Wittlieb has three games as the top point producer and is averaging 13.6 ppg. Becky Zak is second on the team with an 11.7 average and also has three games as the top scorer and Megan Lyte led the squad against Colgate and averages 11.1 ppg.
