The Scoop
Georgetown and Clemson will do battle today in both team's first game of the New Year. It will also be the first time these two teams have ever met. Clemson is the fifth opponent this season that the Hoyas have never seen before in women's hoops. Georgetown is 3-1 against first time competition this season, earning wins over Army, Canisius and Kent State but falling at Utah. Last week Georgetown's men's basketball team also faced Clemson for the first time and earned a 75-60 win in the Rainbow Classic.
Earlier this week Georgetown participated in the La Salle Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. and came away with a 1-1 record, losing to host La Salle but defeating Kent State. The BIG EAST's reigning Rookie of the Week, freshman Kieraah Marlow, led the way for the Hoyas in both games recording her fifth and sixth double-doubles of the year, which leads the BIG EAST, and her ninth and 10th straight games of double digit scoring, which also leads the conference. Her 16.3 points per game leads the team and ranks fourth in the league while her 8.9 rebounds per contest also leads Georgetown and is second in the conference. Senior Sarah Jenkins is climbing up the Hoyas all-time lists. She is one three pointer away from a tie at 12th place and is four steals away from a #24 ranking.
Clemson has lost two straight on the road and has not played a game since December 21st. The Tigers lost 67-54 to Ole Miss in their last outing and fell 66-51 at Rutgers before that. Clemson faced one other BIG EAST team this season and defeated Pittsburgh 51-38. Only one player for Clemson is averaging double-figures in Reggie Maddox who scored 11.0 points a game. Five separate Tigers have led the squad in scoring during the year.
