PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women?s basketball team lost to Georgetown, 76-59, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, February 28 in Providence, R.I.
Georgetown's All America candidate Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) led four Hoya players in double figures with 30 points. She also added a game-high 13 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season to go along with four assists, three blocked shots and two steals. Brunson leads the BIG EAST Conference in scoring, rebounding and double-doubles this season.
PC's Brooke Freeburg, Jill Furstenburg, and Gayle Nwafili each scored 10 points in the Friar effort.
In the first half, the two teams matched up evenly as Georgetown headed to the locker room with a 33-27 lead. Georgetown never trailed in the half, but the Friars inched to within one point with just under four minutes remaining (26-25). In the final 2:09 of the first half, the Hoyas outscored PC, 7-2, to take a six-point advantage into the break.
The Hoyas came out strong in the second half and quickly pushed their lead to 14 points (43-29) over the first 3:33 of play. The Friars cuts the deficit to 10 points (45-35) on a 6-2 scoring run, but it proved to be the closest the Friars would get the remainder of the game. Georgetown held its largest lead of the day, 74-53 (21 points), with 2:29 remaining in the game.
Joining Brunson in double digits for Georgetown were Sarah Jenkins (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) (12 points), Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (10 points) and Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) (10 points). Lisicky dished out five assists, while Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mount St. Joseph?s) came off the bench to record a game-high four steals.
Georgetown will play at Boston College in BIG EAST Conference action on Tuesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. The game marks the Hoyas' regular season finale.
