The Scoop
Georgetown takes to the road for the first time this season and begins its 2004 ECAC slate with a game at Penn State. The Hoyas are 2-2 all-time on Penn State?s campus. GU leads 7-2 in the overall series and has won five straight. The past two contests have been close with GU winning last season 11-9 and the Hoyas pulling out a 11-10 win in 2002 at PSU.
The Hoyas recorded win #1 of 2004 last weekend at home against Cornell, 14-4. After giving up 14 goals in the season opener to Maryland the GU defense stepped up and held the Big Red to 10 goals under its average. Brodie Merrillearned the ECAC?s Defensive Player of the Week award after helping shut down the powerful Cornell offense. On offense the Hoyas were led by youngsters as sophomore Peter Cannon notched his career first hat-trick and freshman Trevor Caseyburied two shots. Hoya captains, Neal Goldmanand Walid Hajj, also came alive in the Cornell victory as Goldman had two goals and an assist and Hajj tied a career high in assists with three and recorded his first tally of 2004.
Penn State won its season opener, 5-4, over Ohio State but then fell in its next two, losing to Notre Dame and Fairfield. The Nittany Lions rebounded this past Wednesday with an 11-4 win over Providence. PSU has three players with four or more goals, led by Will Jones with five. Guarding the cage has been tough duty for PSU?s keepers Mike Stoltz and Josh LaGrow as their overall save percentage is .485.
